Percussion Ensemble
Fall 2010 Semester Information
There will be two separate percussion ensembles, depending on enrollment - Beginning Percussion Ensemble and Beginning/Intermediate Percussion Ensemble.
Beginning Percussion Ensemble - This ensemble is for students with little or no musical training.
Beginning/Intermediate Percussion Ensemble - This ensemble is for students with at least a basic understanding of musical concepts, whether learned through lessons in drums, piano, or some other instrument.
Both percussion ensembles will use drums and small percussion but will not include mallet percussion such as Timpani, Marimba, Bells, etc. as we do not currently have access to those instruments.
Ear Protection:
It is recommended that each student use hearing protection during individual practice and in classes as appropriate.
Schedule:
The beginning percussion ensemble will meet on (day and time TBA) for 45 minutes and the beginning/intermediate ensemble will meet (day and time TBA) for 45 minutes. Students are expected to be punctual.
Classes will begin on (TBA).
It is important that each student be at rehearsals. Absences must be excused. Each ensemble will have performances and we need everyone's participation on a regular basis to be well prepared for the performances.
Performances:
TBA
Fees:
$13.00 per class if paying for the semester in full by the first class.
$15.00 per class if paying on monthly payment plan due the first class of each month.
This is semester tuition and no credit will be given for classes missed unless class is canceled by the teacher.
Equipment and Materials:
Music will be provided and all copies of music must be returned at end of semester. A fee will be assessed for music that is not returned.
Each student will need a good set of drum sticks. I recommend the Vic Firth American Custom SD1 General Drumsticks. A description and great price on these sticks can be found by clicking on the following link:

and do a search for "Vic Firth American Custom SD1 General Drumsticks". Students are responsible for providing their own sticks.
At minimum, each student should also have a practice pad. Ideally, each student will have a snare drum or full drum set. Students may be asked to bring their snare drums or practice pads with them to classes. You can do a search on "Remo Practice Pad with Stand" or "Snare Drum Kit" by clicking on the above Drums and Percussion link to find a decent practice pad or snare drum with stand.
Safety:
It is extremely important that you be on time to pick up your student after class. If you would like your student to walk or ride a bike home after class, or if someone not in your immediate family will be picking them up, please send a note with your student.
Conduct:
If a student is unprepared or is disruptive in class, I reserve the right to dismiss him/her early and the remaining time will not be made up and no reimbursement will be made. Being unprepared may include lack of personal practice, neglecting to bring required materials such as music, drum sticks, or other required materials to class.
Note: Please confirm your student's participation with Paul Worthen by September 13, 2010. Paul Worthen - (801) 492-3831 or email Paul by clicking here. Your student will not be registered until you receive confirmation from Paul.
Please fill out the following form, print it and bring it with you to the first class.

In speaking about his renowned theory of relativity, Einstein said, "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception."
